To those who know me, it is common knowledge that the sport of fencing is important to me. I always dreamed of writing a book on fencing but the treatises in this genre are as exhaustive as there are many. I wouldn’t presume to add my two cents to these tutorials. The last thing we need is another how-to-fence book. That said, I still wanted to write a fencing book. What about a novel set in the fencing world? That might work…
The ultimate question was: how do I transform our hero Rudy from the worst fencer in New York to the Champion of the World (The term Champion of the World is to be stated loudly and with a reverberating echo).
My experience as a fencer, coach, referee, fencing club owner, and administrator supplied me with more than enough furniture to fill this mansion of a tale.
But there had to be something more than a bunch of fencing and cursing: what about love and hate, following one’s moral compass and cheating, and while I’m at it, let’s not leave out sex- no story would be complete without some zing.
I wrote the first paragraph of Slo Mo Man-Game of Lies and honestly can’t remember writing the rest, so there is that. I like to quote Will Parrish: Rudy, never let your life interfere with your fencing…
